Vacant taxis will advertise their availability by illuminating their rooftop light, and can be hailed provided they have an opportunity to pull over safely.
Sydney taxis have a reputation for being difficult to find around their usual shift change-over time of 3am, so keep this in mind if you're planning a night out.
